New Anthem Beer Project Clapback: A Symphony of Citrus Delights

Visiting the New Anthem Beer Project has always been one of my preferred ways to spend a languid weekend afternoon, and it’s not hard to see why. Amidst the backdrop of crisp, cool industrial aesthetics, their latest offering Clapback – a lactose-free, double IPA – brings to the fore flavors that truly represent the spirit of ingenuity and passion that this brewery is renowned for.

Aroma: A bouquet for the senses

Upon my first whiff, I could instantly discern a vibrant symphony of Citra hops with bold notes of tropical papaya and pineapple, topped with a hint of grapefruit. The resulting aroma is a steady, soothing wave of tropical bliss that is nothing short of mesmerizing. The solid citrus-ness of grapefruit, lime and tangerine beautifully intertwine with the unexpected tang of lychee and the brightness of orange. Complementing these are light, grassy undertones, adding an earthy depth to the overall bouquet.

Appearance: A visual delight

Visual appeal – it might be lower on the sensory scale for some, but the arresting hazy appearance of the Clapback is a spectacle to behold. It’s such an integral part of the experience, setting the stage for the delights to come. The 3-point rating certainly doesn’t do justice to the warm, comforting anticipation it inspires.

Flavor: A taste of paradise

A bold, assertive Citra nose of orange and grassy herb, with a subtle funky undertone kickstarts the adventure onto the palate. The flavor personality reveals itself as a melody of heavily hopped orange juice, infused with subtle strands of pine and vegetal notes. The intensity of the orange and orange-smoothie notes on the sip is utterly arresting. The slightly sweet, malty flavor strikes a perfect balance with the hops, zeroing in on a rich, unique taste that’s unparalleled. The bitterness is surprisingly pleasant, nicely embedded in the overall fruitiness.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and satisfying

The Clapback, delivers a fabulous mouthfeel – a perfect blend of a medium-full body, with a smooth, approachable bitterness that doesn’t overpower but rather, gently numbs the tongue. The 5-point rating for mouthfeel is entirely justified. It truly is a joy that can ignite even the most dormant of taste buds.

In conclusion, the Clapback double IPA is an “intense, fruit-forward experience” that gives your senses a delightful surprise. It’s not just a beverage, but rather a journey to an enticing world of flavor, a tantalizing play between sweet and bitter, citrus and herb. Whether it’s for a laid-back breakfast at the brewery or an evening spent with friends, the Clapback stands as a testament to New Anthem Beer Project’s commitment to the art of brewing. Certainly worth a standing ovation
