Review of Foggy on the Details Beer by Firestone Walker Brewing Co

Our Score: 93/100

My Comprehensive Review on Firestone Walker Brewing Co Foggy on the Details

Having heard a fair chunk of rave reviews about the Foggy on the Details by Firestone Walker Brewing Co, I decided to give it a try. Labeled as a “double dry hopped oat pale ale“, this beer had me curious. To put it succinctly, I was not disappointed.

Aroma: 12/20

From the get-go, the beer announces its presence with a powerful hop aroma. Intriguingly, the aromatic profile is not one-dimensional, but rather a delightful cocktail of tropical fruits and herbs. There’s white grape, lychee, papaya, mango, and even a prominent whiff of grapefruit. As the beer warms up, additional layers of herbal and dank aromatics abound, balancing out the fruitiness with a good deal of earthiness. There’s also an undercurrent of soft malty sweetness, acting as the perfect foil to the hop bouquet.

Appearance: 3/5

While not its strongest selling point, the beer makes a decent impression on the aesthetic front. It presents a hazy golden hue that’s, dare I say, ‘foggy’, in line with its namesake. However, the minimal head retention and patchy lacing left a bit to be desired.

Flavor: 18/25

When it came to flavor, the beer truly shone. The hop bitterness hits right away but doesn’t overwhelm, thanks to the robust malt offering balance. As I sipped, I found the flavors echoing the aroma with the tropical fruit and citrus notes becoming increasingly evident. The finishing notes lean towards dry, underlined by strong carbonation, a dash of graininess and elusive hints of pepper and hash. It wraps up with a grapefruit pithiness that leaves a pleasantly persistent aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: 5/10

Monitoring the mouthfeel, there are elements that demand applause, and others that call for improvement. On the upside, there’s a robust texture to the beer and a delightful warmth radiating from its alcohol content. The carbonation, while on the stronger side, does help accent the flavors. That said, the tail end of the mouthfeel can get a tad rough with the beer drying out on the palate quicker than I’d have liked.

Final Thoughts

Despite a few minor hiccups, Foggy on the Details paints a compelling picture. The tropical sweet aroma is countered by funky notes and a light crisp edge, ensuring that no single sensation dominates the nose. The sip carries a distinct dry drinkability without eclipsing the fruity characteristics of the hops. All in all, it garners a respectable score of 93/100 from me, certifying Firestone Walker Brewing Co’s Foggy on the Details as a beer worth the hype and your time.

Disclaimer: My opinions are subjective, but then again, the beauty of beer is in the palate of the beholder.

  1. Suggestion of some malt lying somewhere in the background – oats perhaps? – but, as the name suggests, this beer is foggy on the details.

The aroma alone has a way of getting you excited to take a sip and see what it’s all about.

This review provides a detailed and enticing description of the Foggy on the Details beer, highlighting its complex aroma profile and leaving the reader tantalized to try it themselves. The writer also cleverly incorporates the beer’s name into their review, emphasizing its playfulness and mystery.

  2. Little bit of a vanilla smell, which I found odd but not unpleasant (it could have been the oats). My only qualm was that the aromatics got a little muddled after a while, so a higher score is hard to give. On the whole, however, an intriguingly complex hop profile that’s slightly let down by a lack of focus.

    Overall Score: 93/100

From the aroma to the mouthfeel, every aspect of this beer is well-crafted and well-balanced. My only criticism would be the slight lack of focus in the aromatics, but that’s a minor issue in comparison to the overall quality of this beer. I highly recommend giving it a try for anyone who enjoys a good, hop-forward beer.

  4. Suggestion of caramel malts in the background, adding a nice touch of sweetness to the aroma.

Overall, the aroma was pleasant and enticing, even if it wasn’t the most complex or intense I’ve ever come across.

    Taste: 17/20

The flavor profile of Foggy on the Details continues the fruity and herbal theme initiated by the aroma. It’s a flavor bomb of tropical fruits, with plenty of mango, pineapple, and grapefruit flavors, which make for a pleasantly tart and mouthwatering opening. As the initial fruitiness fades, the herbal and dank notes become more prominent, balancing the tropical sweetness and bringing in some additional complexity. There’s a solid malt backbone holding everything together, with a lightly toasted oat biscuit character. Overall, the taste was quite well-rounded and satisfying, with no overwhelming or unpleasant notes.

    Finish: 6/10

The finish is moderately dry, with a medium bitterness that hangs around for a while. The fruitiness and malt sweetness gradually fade away, leaving behind a lingering impression of hop resin and grapefruit rind. It’s not the most remarkable finish, but it does a decent job of rounding off the experience.

    Body: 4/5

In terms of body, Foggy on the Details is about medium, with a slightly creamy and smooth mouthfeel that’s quite pleasant to drink. That said, I personally would have preferred a slightly fuller body to balance out the strong hop presence.

    Overall score: 14/20

All in all, I would say that the Foggy on the Details is a solid offering from Firestone Walker Brewing Co. While it may not be the most mind-blowing or complex beer out there, it’s definitely a tasty and well-crafted one. I would recommend giving it a try, especially if you’re a fan of hop-forward and tropical-flavored beers.
