Hoppin’ Frog Brewery T.O.R.I.S. The Tyrant Review

Having waited for this with bated breath, the freedom that was granted to the Hoppin’ Frog Brewery in Ohio in 2016, allowed them to bless us with the incredible T.O.R.I.S. Mark my words; their triple oatmeal Russian imperial stout is out of this world. It’s a pleasure to relocate my thoughts about the beer from the brewery into written words.

First Impressions

As soon as you pour, you’re greeted with this super rich, dark and flavorful beer that eats your attention and then asks for second helpings. The rules of beer brewing come alive and the intense stout makes this brew a total fan favourite. Personally, I feel it displays the brewery’s growth with its powerful punch and delightful flavours that seem to be dancing their way out of their shell.

The Aroma Escapade

The aroma is a journey on its own. First, you notice heavy roast that hides inside it, whispers of ash and smoke. It’s not too overpowering, just enough to keep you wondering. Additionally, there’s chocolate, toffee and coffee, the classics of a good stout, but clubbed with a warm earthy, comprehensive, woodsy flavour.

And the fruit! Banana, dark cherry, stone fruit, and pear; each having a part in this festival of an aroma! Do not even get me started on how the rich malt, bread crust, black licorice and molasses add yet another level of complexity to the total symphony.

A Flavorful Dance

Unsurprisingly, the flavor is a mirrored reflection of the aroma, except the dark malt’s sweetness keeps the heavy roast in check, making it a delicious staccato. Savour the dark chocolate and light vanilla, making room for the dark cherry, raisin, earthy and herbal notes, adding even more sophistication.

I was amazed at how smooth and velvety the texture is; it’s rich and chewy throughout your taste expedition. Despite the glaring alcohol heat, there’s a beautiful blend achieved where the roasted malt plays off delightfully against it.

Final Words

The chocolate flavor is the real hero, tying all these elements together in pleasant harmony. The finish comes with a light bitterness, an earthy smoke and the undeniable warmth of supreme chocolate.

This beer is unconventional yet puts forward a unique and amazing stout, a bold move that worked amazingly well for Hoppin’ Frog! Whether you’re pairing it with the richest of desserts or the most robust cigars, this beer doesn’t shy away. It’s a slow sipper you’ll want to take your time with.

Overall, I’d rate it 95/100. It’s a pretty solid imperial stout—not offensive for the high alcohol content, and all the dark roasty components come together fairly well. Getting an 11 on aroma, 3 on appearance, 19 on flavor, and 4 on mouthfeel, I can’t recommend this beer enough. It’s every stout lover’s dream!

Conclusion

T.O.R.I.S. The Tyrant is a testament to freedom in the brewing world, a sublime display of flavors and aromas that cannot be tied down by limitations. This beer is indeed stretching its wings, and I recommend you take flight with it. Cheers to Hoppin’ Frog Brewery for brewing this absolute wonder!
