Perennial Artisan Ales Maman Review
If you’re a craft beer aficionado like myself, then you’re likely in a constant quest to discover new and exciting breweries and brews. I was in that very mission when I stumbled across the Perennial Artisan Ales Maman, an imperial stout that has spent almost two years in barrels. Deciding to give it a shot was one of the best choices I’ve made in my beer tasting venture.
Aroma
Often, checking out the aroma of the beer is like getting a teaser of the cinematic extravaganza you’re about to witness. Giving the Maman a whiff, I was immediately greeted with hints of molten chocolate cake. Additionally, there was a significant sense of bourbon, coupled with a subtle touch of raisins. The haul of the nose is a definite 12 out of 15 in my books, simply due to its complexity and richness.
Appearance
Moving on to the appearance, it scored a decent 3 out of 5. There’s nothing groundbreaking about its look, it’s the standard opaque black you’d associate with a stout. However, I must say, the anticipation builds as you pour it into a glass, setting the stage for the session ahead.
Flavor
Now, this is where the rubber meets the road. The flavor profile of the Maman stout is impressively complex, earning it a 19 out of 20. On my first sip, the rich tastes of dark chocolate and prunes dominated my palate. Then, as I swished it around a bit, notes of vanilla shockingly emerged out of nowhere, followed by whipped marshmallows. It was a rollercoaster of flavors, expertly blended and crafted in an artistic execution that left me in awe. Truly, this is a stout that tests your taste buds in the best way possible.
Mouthfeel
The finishing touch that ties all the elements together is the mouthfeel. The Maman stout scored a 4 out of 5 in this department. The beer has a solid texture that complements the rich flavor profile perfectly. It’s smooth and thick, just like a stout should be, without being overly heavy. It’s a drink that you’d want to savor, and the mouthfeel ensures you do exactly that.
Final Thoughts
Summing up, the Perennial Artisan Ales Maman has left a lasting impression on me. From the aroma to the appearance, flavor, and mouthfeel, this stout is a wonderfully exciting journey of tastes and textures. You can truly tell that it’s been aged in barrels for 22 to 27 months, resulting in an exquisite structure and pulling together tight oak notes with soft vanilla overtones. My overall score for this stout is a resounding 96 out of 100. If you consider yourself a beer enthusiast, this is one stout you wouldn’t want to miss!
