Velvet Rooster Review – By Tall Grass Brewing Company

I recently had the pleasure of sampling a rather unique Belgian Tripel, the Velvet Rooster by Tallgrass Brewing Company. Described by the brewers as “smooth and carefully crafted like a velvet painting, with an 8.5 percent ABV that lets this bird strut its spurs”, and I have to say, their description isn’t far off. This beer comes with an overall score of 85 out of 100 which has enough charm to draw attention.

AROMA: 11/20

The aroma of the Velvet Rooster doesn’t exactly jump out at you. It’s a gentle introduction to this beverage, offering a meek bouquet of banana, honeydew, pears, grassy hops, and a subtle hint of spice. It doesn’t give you the rich, aromatic profile that most tripels do, staying on the lighter side with a slightly sweet malt aroma. If you like your beers subtly scented, this might be a good fit for you.

APPEARANCE: 3/5

The Velvet Rooster presents an aesthetically pleasing visage in keeping with the classic Tripel look.

FLAVOR: 17/20

The flavor profile is where the Velvet Rooster really steps up. A more-than-average malt foundation is slightly sweet, underscored by faint undertones of caramel and a solid Belgian yeast presence. The yeast phenolics manifest as green pepper and plasticky notes, while the esters deliver a blend of banana and apple in the middle. The flavor transitions towards a grassy note, ending in a long finish that starts off dry and subtly implies sweetness at the end. The alcohol presence is noticeable, warming you from the inside, but not overwhelming thanks to an effective carbonation balance. There’s also a notable floral hops character and a significant bitterness – most of which could be attributed to the phenols, with a fair contribution from the hops.

MOUTHFEEL: 4/5

The texture of Velvet Rooster is a seamless blend of creamy and fizzy, a pleasing complement to its full flavor profile. This is a beer that you will want to savor in your mouth before you swallow.

Overall Thoughts

Not quite your classic Tripel, the Velvet Rooster gets you tantalizingly close but veers off into its own direction. The individual components are all there – the aroma, flavor profile, and mouthfeel – but they don’t quite come together to form a perfect harmony. That being said though, it is still an inherently drinkable beer that leans more towards a Belgian specialty than a traditional tripel. The Velvet Rooster is a unique offering that’s well worth a try for those seeking a delightful twist on their regular Tripel.
