About the Craft Maltsters Guild
The Craft Maltsters Guild was formed in 2013 by eight innovative craft malthouses. The guild fervently emphasizes quality and craftsmanship as a necessity for success. Together, they work on a mission to promote and sustain the tradition of craft malting in North America, provide exceptional services and resources to the Association’s members, and uphold the highest quality and safety standards for Craft Maltsters.
Definition of Craft Malt
Craft Malt can be defined by three main qualifications:
- Small: A Member Malthouse produces between 5 metric tons (5.5 US tons) to 10,000 metric tons (11,000 US tons) per year.
- Local: Over 50% of grains are grown within a 500-mile radius of the Member Malthouse.
- Independent: Each Member Malthouse must be independently owned by a 76% majority of ownership.
With these definitions in mind, the goal of the guild is to keep the traditions of craft malting alive while celebrating local, sustainable grain sourcing and independent ownership.

2024 Scholarships and Education Opportunities
In 2024, the Guild will be offering scholarships for both in-person and virtual attendance at the Craft Malt Conference (MaltCon2024), scheduled for February 23-24, 2024, at UC Davis, California. These scholarships will provide a much-needed boost for individuals striving to succeed in the craft malt industry.
Two in-person scholarships will be offered, which will cover free registration to the conference in Maine (a $775 value, including some meals), plus a $1000 stipend to assist with travel expenses. Beyond that, three virtual scholarships will be made available, opening the door for remote learning and participation.
All scholarship recipients will also receive a complimentary one-year Individual Membership ($150 value) with the Guild. This membership will grant recipients access to our extensive video and webinar archive, allowing them to continue their craft malt education throughout the year. They will also have the option to join upcoming educational webinars and participate in discussions on Guild member forums about a wide range of craft malt-related topics.
Eligibility
This scholarship program aims at providing online educational opportunities to individuals from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, gender identities and expressions, sexual orientations, and disabilities. To be considered for this terrific opportunity, applicants must identify as a member of one or more of these groups.
