A Glimpse into Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co.’s Newest Release

Last month, we caught a sneak peek of Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co.’s newest seasonal beer at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. Fast forward to today, and that same beer, Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Cocoa Porter, is now available nationwide. That’s right! Innovation is crucial for seasonal beer releases, and undoubtedly, barrel-aging beer involves a fair share of trial and error, akin to aging whiskey. It also requires a virtue known as patience.

Striving for a Unique Barrel-Aged Porter

Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Cocoa Porter is the second in a lineage of seasonal barrel-aged porters to be released during the holiday season by Lexington. Compared to last year’s Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Peppermint Porter, which conjured memories of candy canes and peppermint schnapps, this year’s Cocoa variant aims to be a hark back to childhood, delivering rich chocolate and hot cocoa flavors.

Master Brewer at Lexington, Brandon Martin, describes the Cocoa Porter as “brewed with cocoa nibs and 100% barrel-aged to create a rich, full-bodied Porter complete with notes of bittersweet chocolate, roasted malts, and hints of oak and vanilla, rounded out with a sweet toffee finish.”

Looking Ahead: Tomorrow’s Brews

Looking to future brews, Martin believes that the Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Cocoa Porter could make an excellent base for exploration. It could open up possibilities for experimenting with different chocolates, malts, aging techniques, and any other variables that would allow for innovative brewing. The goal? Capturing the delightful world of chocolate in a bottle.

Bruz Beers Releases Hellraiser

An artisanal brewery based in Denver, Bruz Beers, is dedicated to brewing traditional Belgian-style beers and innovative Belgian-inspired brews. Just before Halloween, they released Hellraiser, a Belgian-style Golden Strong Ale with a hefty 10% ABV. Its name follows the tradition of Golden Strong Beers being named after the devil, a tradition dating back to the end of World War I in Belgium. Hellraiser lives up to its name, packed with bready malts, spicy hops, and notes of bitter orange peel and coriander.

Heavy Seas Beer Showcases Unique Maryland Hop

Heavy Seas Beer recently embarked on a unique brewing adventure. It introduced its latest taproom-only release, Altimore, an Altbier brewed with the extremely rare Monocacy hop. The Monocacy hop was discovered in the late 1960s and remained hidden until its recent revival. This hop is recognized for its distinct chemical profile and adaptability to Maryland’s hot, humid climate. Chris Leonard, Heavy Seas Brewmaster, stated that Monocacy hop offers “spicy, herbaceous, floral aromatics.”

Karl Strauss’ 2023 Collaboration Series

In other news, Karl Strauss Brewing Co. unveiled the grand finale of its anticipated 2023 Collaboration Series, working with Harland Brewing Co. to release Brisky Business Cold IPA. This Cold IPA features pineapple, citrus, and floral notes—a creation that we owe to the ingenious use of puffed jasmine rice and a blend of exotic hops.

Montauk Brewing Debuts New Double IPA

Montauk Brewing Co., a subsidiary of Tilray Brands, has released a new Double India Pale Ale (IPA) called Major Wave Chaser. Ty Gilmore, President of U.S. Beers for Tilray Brands, described the new release as “a hopped-up version of our most popular beer.” It offers a host of tropical and pine flavors and is available in single 19.2-ounce cans and 15-packs of 19.2-ounce cans.

With so many innovative and exciting beers now hitting the market, there has never been a better time to be a craft beer enthusiast!
